Types of flowers

There are a lot of types of flowers in the world. Basically, we can classify flowers in to some common types as follow:

Types of flowers by Corolla:


  • Sympetalous flowers: When flowers petals are joined, partially or fully.

  • Polypetalous flowers: Opposite to Sympetalous flowers, Polypetalous flowers have their petals are not joined.

  • Zygomorphic flowers: This type of flowers has two symmetrical parts, along a single axis passing through centre.


  • Actinomorphic flowers: These flowers have radial symmetry. The flower can be divided into two identical parts along any imaginary axis through centre. Poppy flowers, rose flowers ... are are belonged to this type.


  • Types of flowers by Position:

  • Axillary flowers: In this type, flowers are carried at the junction axis and the leaf. Catharanthus and Callicarpa are belonged to Axillary flowers.


  • Terminal flowers: In this type, flowers are grown at the tip of the branches. Magnolia grandiflora and Nerium oleander are belonged to Terminal flowers.


  • Types of flowers by Inflorences, Clusters and Branches:

  • Cluster flowers: More than two flowers gathered in a cluster on a single branched. Ligustrum japonicum and Pentas are belonged to this type.

  • Single flowers: Flower has a single stem at the tip of peduncle. Typical single flower is Tulip.

  • Inflorescence flowers: This type is formed by group of small flowers. There are two types of Inflorescence flowers: Racemose Inflorescences and Cymose Inflorescences


  • Types of flowers by Blossom:

  • Annual flowers: Flowers are bloomed and faded within a year.

  • Biennial flowers: Flowers are bloomed at the beginning of season and faded at the end of season.
